Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of compacted bio-cemented lateritic soil in municipal solid waste containment application

چکیده
Most engineering infrastructures, including municipal solid waste containment facilities, are situated in unsaturated zone. The use of chemical additives for soil improvement has been linked to the adverse environmental issues being experienced globally. Research into more sustainable methods led discovery a novel and innovative method known as microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP). Lateritic was treated with stepped Sporosarcina pasteurii (S. ) suspension density up 2.40 x 109 cells/ml at moulding water content (MWC) -2, 0 +2 % relative optimum moisture (OMC) before compaction using Reduced British Standard light (RBSL), (BSL), West African (WAS) or Intermediate heavy (BSH) energies. Compacted specimens were saturated cementation reagent three cycles 1/3 rd pore volume 6 hours’ interval induce an ambient laboratory temperature 24±2°C. soil-water characteristics curves (SWCC) determined pressure plate extractor over range 10-1500 kPa. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity values predicted S. densities considered Brooks-Corey, van Genuchten well Fredlund Xing curve fitting prediction models. Results show that prepared lower, MWC OMC generally higher than regardless compactive efforts considered. Brooks-Corey model gave best which fit requirements facilities matric suction considered, – Xing, when compared measured values.

Effective Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity
Steady-state and transient one-dimensional unsaturated flow in vertically stratified porous media are examined. Saturated hydraulic conductivity and the alpha parameter of the exponential hydraulic conductivity function were assumed to vary from soil layer to soil layer. The use of effective unsaturated hydraulic conductivity to compute matric potential in the soil profile is demonstrated. Resu...
متن کاملUnsaturated hydraulic conductivity function based on a soil fragmentation process
We present a new two-parameter expression for relative hydraulic conductivity (RHC) of partially saturated soils. It is based on the premise of Assouline et al. [1998] that soil structures evolve from a uniform random fragmentation process. This assumption allows us to derive hydraulic properties of soils (water retention curves and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity) from primary properties, s...

Slope stability of bioreactor landfills during leachate injection: Effects of unsaturated hydraulic properties of municipal solid waste
In bioreactor landfill, the leachate flow and moisture distribution depend upon saturated and unsaturated hydraulic properties of municipal solid waste (MSW). The effects of unsaturated parameters have not been studied because of scarcity of the data and variation in unsaturated parameters due to MSW heterogeneity, degree of decomposition, and pore structure. In this study, a numerical two-phas...
متن کاملAssessment of Soil Contamination near Unlined Municipal Solid Waste Landfill
The disposal of municipal solid waste into the landfills has been recognized as the major source of soil, surface water and groundwater contamination. Municipal solid waste disposal site for the city of Ludhiana, in Punjab, India, has become an overflowing landfill because of the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste at the site. The leachate produced by landfilling site contains a large amount...
